leaving andrews you're fine right now. it started with a call from the famous hey adams hotel saying a man was trying to force his way into a woman's room but "the washington post" reports that call has led to a couple of secret service agents being demoted, booted off the presidential detail. >> the investigation into the initial incident led to the discovery to even more questionable behavior. delia goncalves is outside adams with the details which is of course right near the white house. >> reporter: right across the way from take fayette square. this was actually the temporary home of the obamas during the beginning phases of his presidency. i have to tell you "the washington post" really blew the lid off this case. the incident here at the hotel happened last spring but there was no external investigation until the post started making calls just last month. this incident happened one night in may. hotel staff alerted the white house of some odd behavior by one of their secret service

agents. veteran agent assigned to the president's detail was demanding to get into a guest's room. the post reveals he left a bullet from his service weapon inside the room, tried to retrieve it but the guest refused to let him inside. as a result, the secret service did a routine check of his blackberry. they discovered he and another supervisor timothy barraclough sent suggestive e-mails. now he's off the job and barraclough was reassigned. this comes a year and a half after a prostitution scandal involving the president's detail during one of his visits to columbia. what does the secret service have to say about all of this and why did it take so long for an external investigation? those answers coming up in a half an hour. mike, andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves live outside the hotel. in arlington, a jury took about an hour to acquit an air

force officer of charges that he had groped a woman. lieutenant colonel jeffrey krusinski led the military branch's sex assault team. in may a 23-year-old woman claimed the 42-year-old colonel grabbed her behind outside a crystal city bar. krusinski was dismissed as head of that time and his arrest fueled outrage over sex abuse in the military and whether the pentagon takes the issue seriously. a former aid at the american school for the deaf now awaits his sentencing in sex assault charges. a howard county jury found 38- yard clarence taylor guilty of sexually -- 38-year-old clarence taylor guilty of sexually assaulting to young girls. the incidents happened between 2008 and 2011 while he was working as a dormitory aide. taylor faces up to 50 years in prison. his sentencing is scheduled for january. a 2014 d.c. mayoral election is still nearly a year away but of course it's never too early to start campaigning around here.

that's for sure. several of the candidates debated the issue last night. democratic council members muriel bowser, jack evans, and others including restaurant owner andy shallal. mayor vincent gray still hasn't announced whether he'll seek a second term. looks like investors decided they wanted to go shopping just like macy's. >> i feel like a broken record recently but i don't mind that when i'm saying over and over again wall street starts again from another record high this morning. we find optimistic outlook for holiday spending from macy's. that led the market higher. as for today wall street will be watching washington. confirmation hearings begin today for the president's pick to be the next head of the federal reserve. we're talking about janet yellen. the dow rose by 71 points to close at 15,821. the s&p 500 got a 14-point bump

and the nasdaq rose by 45. it's not just traders making money off the 20% surge this year. everyday folks are as well. 41k balances have hit a record high. fidelity investments says the average balance reached $84,300 during the third quarter, up more than 11% from last year. and if you're a long-timesaver, your accounts are up even more. workers who have been consistently contributing to a 401(k) plan the past 10 years saw their average balance climb by 20%. three workers from tesla motors are recovering from injuries after a machine malfunctioned at the car factory spilling hot metal. one employee was seriously hurt. two others sustained minor injuries. tesla's c.e.o. visited the workers in the hospital last night. they make all of their model s sedans at this plant in freemont, california. those vehicles are being

5:14. thursday morning as we've been saying a cold start but a warm- up the rest of the day. we have some 60s coming here, even as early as friday in a few spots. that's some good news. here's a look at your day planner. expect sunshine today but andrea alluded to a cold start. 20s in most areas but by early afternoon, 52. even lunch time 50 'ish. high around 55. this evening it will get chilly again but not as cold as it is this morning with 45 by 9:00. headed back into the 20s and

30s tonight. we see the cold. it really goes down to the mid- south, the deep south through the northeast, ohio, tennessee valleys. everybody is in the 20s and 30s. ocean city, the airport there coming in at 24 this morning with 27 in richmond and a little bit milder air trying to come in from the west aloft. that's going to mix down by mid- to late morning so we will warm up significantly from these temperatures which are the mid- 20s in fairfax, low 20s germantown, bowie 26 with 28 in waldorf. had frost and 31 in prince frederick an hour ago. loudoun county, leesburg, lovettsville, 27 degrees. there's manassas sticking out with the 19 this morning. outside on the michael & son weather camera, no problems. good visibility. clear skies. we've got a temperature of 31, feeling like 26 with a breeze out of the south, southwest at 5. that's a warmer direction for us. the humidity 69% but dew points in the low 20s. i like the dew point. it doesn't change with a temperature like the humidity does. a real measure helps --

[indiscernible] i'm looking up in canada here. while there is argument irair in -- arctic airway up in central canada, got some temperatures in the 20s and 30s. the arctic air has to reload and that means there's no good supply of arctic air to come south. yes, a cold one across the lower 48. lots of 20s and 30s this morning but denver is at 48 so the warmth on the western high plains is going to start to return. see bismarck 41 degrees. that's milder air coming toward us. so high pressure is in control on the east. the other thing that's telling me it's going to warm up, the way the clouds are moving, just west to east. this is a zonal flow. no big dips in the jet stream. so you can't get big storms and you can't get big temperature outbreaks. cold air outbreaks. around us some clouds to the north and northwest. mainly in the mountains. not going to be a problem. we'll stay mostly sunny today. that's a good looking day across the board. we'll show you a patch or two of clouds later on.

tonight generally clear. tomorrow starts out with sunshine. look how the clouds increase for the afternoon and evening. then tomorrow night some southwest to northeast. we're going to have some showers moving in. most should hold off till late tomorrow night into saturday morning. i think saturday morning showers will give way to a little bit of sun in the afternoon on saturday. so even that doesn't look too bad. 55 today after the chilly start. tonight 36 in town. mid-20s in the coldest spots. tomorrow near 60. some showers tomorrow night. i think they'll be holding off till after the football games. then saturday the early showers. then partly sunny, 62. sunday mid-60s with some late showers possible into sunday night and the first half of monday before clearing later on monday. monday still mild before colder temperatures return tuesday and wednesday highs then back in the 40s. monika samtani stepping in now. timesaver traffic for you here on a thursday morning. >> thank so you much, howard. we're going to check out the beltway first which is pretty much all green all around town.

you know how mild the beltway is. it's 64 miles and all of those miles look fine right now coming into the beltway on the dulles toll road, sterling all the way toward highsons you're fine. 66 -- tysons you're fine. same story 66 coming from manassas. 95 which i believe is now beginning to get heavy out of quantico. it's going to be off and on into woodbridge and then here in springfield. both the main and hov lanes although open you can see how heavy it is right here exiting for the beltway. 395 there are no issues to the 14th street bridge. i just want it to stay that way unlike yesterday it was a really tough rush hour yesterday. let's go back over to our maps this time all the way out east coming in from route 50 you're fine out of annapolis, the bw parkway, laurel, greenbelt, chervely. we're going to -- cheverly. we're going to take a live look coming off the bay bridge into annapolis. right now no delays. back to you. after opening the season with a game? south korea, georgetown got to play in front of the hometown

5:22. quiet day ahead. that's good. just cold this morning. 19 or so manassas last check. in the 20s most areas, low 30s in town and on the bay. as we go through the day sunshine. don't forget the shades there. a cold start in the 30s at 9:00. by lunch time 50, if not the low 50s in many areas. then a decent afternoon with a high around 55. good morning, everybody. i'm kristen berset. the washington wizards have been anything but consistent as of late. they lost a heartbreaker in overtime. they squandered an early lead against the mavericks and last night it wasn't even close.

wizards had lost 14 straight to the spurs going into last night's game. that streak continues. san antonio with six players in double figures. spurs win comfortably 92-79. their 15th straight win over washington. down a level hoyas hosting state at the verizon center. an easy one for the hoyas. georgetown wins by 18. maryland and their home opener hosting abilene christian. the terps trailed by 6 with 14 minutes left in the second half but went on a 29-0 run in the game. maryland winds up winning 67- 44. just as the terps lead the acc, well, the conference tournament decides to return to the district. the commissioner announced yesterday that the acc tournament will be held at the verizon center in 2016. it's primarily been held in

beltway coming in from southern maryland, route 4, route 5, route 301. everything is cool. no problems to report all the way to the andrews air force base and down into oxon hill and across the wilson bridge. we are in great shape. let's take a live look outside. we're going to take a look first at the northbound side of 395. this is at the 14th street bridge where the lanes are open. in fact, this is a good indication of all of the potomac and anacostia river crossings. let's go back over to the maps. this time we'll switch over to the other side of town. 270 now beginning to see a tiny bit of slow traffic around route 109 toward 121. the southbound side lanes are open and a little thick here but no incidents all the way in to rockville. back to you guys. >> thanks, monika. today people from the obama administration are going to capitol hill to meet with some nervous democrats, specifically the ones who are up for reelection and they're concerned about being tied to this rollout of the affordable care act. >> this comes after the obama administration reveals the

dismal signup numbers for the health care.governor website. less than 20,000 people completed their enrollment through the site. another # 9,000 used -- 79,000 used the exchanges run by 14 states and the district. president obama is trying to reassure lawmakers the website's flaws will be fixed by the end of this month. >> i was surprised when he called me so late. but, yes, i feel very comfortable after having my conversation last night that it will be fixed. >> i think you know what our view is. we think the thing ought to be repealed and replaced. >> house leaders have scheduled a vote tomorrow on a bill to allow insurers to keep selling plans that don't meet the standards of the affordable care act. an incident at d.c.'s famous hay-adams hotel led to the suspension of two secret service agents both allegedly sent sexual explicit e-mails to

a female. >> reporter: this hotel now the center of another secret service sex scandal involving some of the very men charged in keeping the president safe. this all occurred last may. hotel staff told the white house about senior supervisor zamora's strange behavior one night. he was demanding to get back into a woman's room. the post revealed when he was staying inside he unloaded his service weapon and later returned to retrieve a single bullet he left behind. that call sparked an internal investigation. the secret service checked out zamora's blackberry, discovered that he and another supervisor timothy barraclough sent sexually suggestive e-mails to a female subordinate. zamora is off the job. barraclough is reassigned but the secret service only told the inspector general last month saying they handled the

matter internally. a spokesperson for the agency says, quote, we have always maintained that the secret service has professional and dedicated work force. periodically we have isolated incidents of misconduct just like every organization does. now, this comes about a year and a half you may remember after secret service agents preparing for a presidential visit to columbia were busted with prostitutes. what has the secret service done since then to try to, quote, curb a male dominated culture of hard partying and other excesses? we'll explore coming up in the next half-hour. mike, back to you. >> good tease, deal ya. talk to you then. some homeowners in arlington are facing bills well over $10,000 a piece all to repair their sewer line. the line is under the block between the 9th and 10th streets to north daniel streets. the county says they repaired that line in the past but

recently determined they do not own the line which dates back to the 1920's. so state law bars county governments from maintaining privately owned lines. the line was built by a company that doesn't exist anymore. both candidates for attorney general in virginia have now formed transition teams. that's because republican mark obenshain only trails democrat mark herring by 164 votes while herring has declared himself the winner, obenshain calls that premature. the state board of elections won't certify the results until november 25. obenshain says if he's still trailing at that point, then he'll decide whether to request a recount. >> es it is 5:34 if you're just waking up. >> jess came is back on how the latest airline merger could affect our local airports.  good morning, jess. >> good morning to everybody at home. the merger between american airlines and u.s. airways is creating the world's largest carrier. it's also creating a lot of

question marks for travelers, like what will happen to their frequent flyer miles and prices. less than a decade ago, nine major airlines crisscrossed the skies but the indust has gone through merger after merger after merger and with this new deal, only four major airlines remain. experiments say prices could go up on routes like dallas to cha u.s. airways went head to head because that competition is disappearing. but fares could drop at seven major airports where the two airlines have agreed to sell takeoff and landing slots to low cost carriers in order to get the government's approval. reagan national is one of those airports giving up 104 slots. so the move could be good for some prices at reagan. >> i think it's a win for the low cost carriers. all of a sudden they now have access to major markets that they couldn't get before. >> in the meantime travelers could face some transitional challenges, for example. experiments say booking systems between the two carriers might

have trouble talking to each other at first but your frequent flyer miles are probably safe. so how much could prices rise after this merger? that is the subject of a hot debate right now in the industry. if we look back at history at delta's merger with northwest airlines back in 2008, prices rose more than 10% on four ever the routes they dominated. something we'll clearly be watching in the wake of this merger. >> bigger never turns out to be better for the customer. >> good for the airline. >> good for the airline though. all right, jess, thank you. it is 5:36. it's almost a decade and people are still quoting lines from anchor man. >> now the movie is the basis

5:38 on this thursday morning a. chilly morning. we have a few upper teens. on a good note, very little wind out there so winds not much of a factor but it's a cold start. milder air is returning today. your forecast calling for sunshine once we get there at 6:50. sets at 4:55. 50 degrees by noon on our way to 55 and a drive home temperature of 51. seven-day forecast even warmer temperatures and the upcoming weekend outlook. right now monika is in with timesaver traffic. here on the northbound side of i-95 it's beginning to spell out leaving 644 to the beltway. no problems on 395 right now. there is a disabled vehicle on the clara barton parkway inbound right at the chain bridge and now an accident reported on 270 coming out of frederick. i'll have that in my next report. back to you guys. we are starting to learn about who the entertainers will be when president obama and the first family light the national christmas tree and the lighting ceremonial. it's three weeks from today and

5:45. a cold snap. it's going to snap back to warmer temperatures as well. >> even this afternoon will be comfortable compared to where we've been the last couple of days. back in the 50s. got some 60s on that seven-day not too far behind it. that's pretty good news there. weather wise, a cold start. got teens in a few spots. mainly in the 20s though this morning but we are going to be much more comfortable even by lunch time. here's a look at your day planner. temperatures starting out in the 20s and 30s. by noon 50. on our way to 55 for a high. probably 2:00 or so. by 58 we're sitting at 46 degrees. the winds won't be nearly as strong as they have been. southwest 5, 8 miles an hour. but it's a cold morning across most of the region. in fact, much of the country east of the rockies is dealing with freezing temperatures this morning. 27 in raleigh and lexington. 28 at pittsburgh. even atlantic city this morning 31. ocean city 24. look at the difference, though, between being in town and being

away from town. 31 in d.c. also the bay helps. annapolis is 31. you go west manassas 19. even upper marlboro, andrews in the mid-20s this morning. down to 23 in laurel and germantown. so very chilly and frosty start in a lot of spots as well. michael & son weather camera is quiet and clear. 31, feeling like 26 at national. winds fairly light, too. south, southwest at 5 and the barometer falling at 30, 36. as the high pressure pulls away, winds will turn more to the south, southwest. all of these 50s you see for highs today in atlanta and little rock and dallas, those warmer temperatures will be shooting our way. in fact, they're going to be in the 60s tomorrow. we'll climb a little bit tomorrow into the upper 50s, some afternoon clouds may hinder us just a little bit. then as we head toward saturday, now we're going to be 60, if not low 60s here. dallas mid-70s. look how the 6 on the overspread across the south and tennessee valleys. so some milder air is just

lurking a little bit off to the south and west. it's definitely going to come in. we have a zonal flow in the atmosphere so the clouds are moving west to east across the country. no big dips in the jet stream. the arctic air is way up there. canada is even rather mild at the moment. that's got to reload before we're talking about another cold shot around here. got the cold now but as the high pulls away, we'll stay goodbye to the cold air. there's the front from a couple of days ago. well off shore. winds turn more westerly. besides bringing in the milder air, it will increase the cloudiness starting tomorrow amp. here we are midday on friday. look how the clouds lift to the north and the east. showers by tomorrow afternoon. kentucky down through charleston, south carolina and atlanta. all of that lifts northeast. friday night at 9:30 so i think we're going to be done in most areas with the football games before the rain moves in and overnight friday night into saturday morning we'll be dealing with a few showers but i think a stronger system here will be around sunday night, monday morning midday.
